Making Media: Story Boarding

As a few of you are leaving for World Challenge this week I wanted to ensure that before you left you all had an idea of how to storyboard and had an idea for your Music Video.

As you all know, a storyboard looks like this:

However, drawing ideas for shots comes at the end of process. You need to envision your product before you put pen to paper. Here are some ideas that you need to take on board before you start drawing...

What shot are you going to begin with?
- Most films begin with an establishing shot to establish the setting.
- Some start with extreme close ups to immediately establish an emotional link with a character.
- You need to establish where the action is taking place.
- You need to establish a mood or atmosphere.
- You need to establish a character.

What kind of conventional music video approach are you taking?
- Band/Performance:
How are you going to make your artist powerful and influential? How are you going to make it seem that they are good at what they do?

- Narrative/Story:
You need a structure in mind (beginning, middle, end).
How are you going to tell the story quickly?
Why should we care about the protagonist?
How are you going to keep the audience engaged?
Beginning and the end are so important!
What obstacles are the characters overcoming?

TASK: Using the questions above draw the final draft of your storyboard. Whilst drawing this label the following underneath each drawing.

EXT. = Exterior Shot
INT. = Interior Shot
And label the type of shot you are using e.g.: CU = Close Up

You may use this blank storyboard if you prefer.
